Unstable power supply making gas plant attractive for manufacturing – Daily-Need boss

The high cost of electricity and the unreliable power supply from the grid have led many manufacturers to switch to gas plants, reducing downtime, emissions, and operating costs. Oluwatosin Jolayemi, the group managing director of Daily-Need Group, a manufacturer of pharmaceutical, food, and personal care products, highlighted the benefits of this transition. Jolayemi explained that the irregular power supply from the national grid caused significant losses before the company made the switch to gas and diesel generators. Daily-Need Group invested in a 1 MW gas plant, with Clarke Energy handling the installation and service support. This decision resulted in a 60% cost saving on energy generation. In addition, running the gas power plant has helped the company become more socially and environmentally responsible by reducing carbon emissions and fostering better relationships with regulatory agencies and stakeholders interested in sustainability. Yiannis Tsantilas, managing director of Clarke Energy in Nigeria and Sub Sahara Africa, emphasized the importance of resilience and innovation in supporting manufacturing in Nigeria. The partnership between Daily-Need Group and Clarke Energy aligns with the goal of providing quality consumer goods while also impacting medical care affordability and sustainability. Jolayemi mentioned that the migration to the gas plant has significantly reduced production downtime due to machine breakdowns, especially for sensitive electronic-dependent machines. The manufacturing outfit sources gas through a piped gas line from a major supplier and is installing a backup system to avoid disruptions during periods of low gas supply. Daily-Need Industries, which employs over 200 full-time employees, started as a pharmaceutical retailer in the 1960s and has since expanded to produce over 20 product categories. The company has found the Nigerian market to be quality-focused, with the perception of quality playing a crucial role in product adoption and market performance.
